The Structure and the Function of the Cochlear Intra-Strial Fluid-Blood Barrier

چکیده

The fluid-blood barrier selectively excludes most blood-borne substances from entering the inner ear, protecting tissues from factors in the blood which would perturb the homeostasis [1]. In her paper, Dr. Shi timely reviews current views on the structure and function, pathology and therapeutic targets of the blood barrier in the stria vascularis. The blood barrier in the stria vascularis is a specialized capillary networks in the cochlea, which also constitutes part of the blood-labyrinth barrier (BLB) in the inner ear.

Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Middle Ear Inflammation Disrupts the cochlear Intra-Strial Fluid–Blood Barrier through Down-Regulation of Tight Junction Proteins

Middle ear infection (or inflammation) is the most common pathological condition that causes fluid to accumulate in the middle ear, disrupting cochlear homeostasis. Lipopolysaccharide, a product of bacteriolysis, activates macrophages and causes release of inflammatory cytokines. Many studies have shown that lipopolysaccharides cause functional and structural changes in the inner ear similar to...

Pathophysiology of the cochlear intrastrial fluid-blood barrier (review).

The blood-labyrinth barrier (BLB) in the stria vascularis is a highly specialized capillary network that controls exchanges between blood and the intrastitial space in the cochlea. The barrier shields the inner ear from blood-born toxic substances and selectively passes ions, fluids, and nutrients to the cochlea, playing an essential role in the maintenance of cochlear homeostasis. Anatomically...

Acoustic Trauma Increases Cochlear and Hair Cell Uptake of Gentamicin

BACKGROUND Exposure to intense sound or high doses of aminoglycoside antibiotics can increase hearing thresholds, induce cochlear dysfunction, disrupt hair cell morphology and promote hair cell death, leading to permanent hearing loss. When the two insults are combined, synergistic ototoxicity occurs, exacerbating cochlear vulnerability to sound exposure. The underlying mechanism of this synerg...

Characterization of Cochlear Degeneration in the Inner Ear of the German Waltzing Guinea Pig: a Morphological, Cellular, and Molecular Study

The German waltzing guinea pig is a new strain of animals with yet unknown gene mutation(s) displaying recessively inherited cochleovestibular impairment. The homozygous animals (gw/gw) are deaf already at birth and display typical waltzing behavior throughout life. The heterozygous animals (gw/+) do not suffer from hearing loss and vestibular symptoms. The present thesis is focused on the homo...

Study of Pulsatile Non-Newtonian Blood Flow Through Abdominal Aorta and Renal Arteries Incorporating Fluid- Structure Interaction

Background: The interaction between the blood and the vessel wall is of great clinical interest in studying cardiovascular diseases, the major causes of death in developed countries. Objective: To understand the effects of incorporating fluid-structure interaction into the simulation of blood flow through an anatomically realistic model of abdominal aorta and renal arteries reconstructed from CT...
